We have seen even with the amount of rainfall we receive in Ireland and the UK the introduction of government measures such as hosepipe bans and water restrictions. With the effects of global warming becoming apparent we should be thinking carefully about landscape design when it comes to our back gardens.

Fortunately your lifestyle doesn’t have to be sacrificed in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of your home. One of the simplest ways of water conservation is to introduce paving into the design of the garden. Gardens, lawns and backyards utilise a significant amount of water to facilitate growth. In addition to this, they have a large maintenance overhead which can be difficult for a lot of people to upkeep.

Unless you are one of those people who really enjoy spending time in the garden for long periods, back gardens are often difficult to maintain.

One of the simplest ways to preserve water is to incorporate paving and other hard landscaping materials such as flag paving or gravel. The immediate effect that this has is that you will save water and the time involved with lawn maintenance. Other ways to preserve water is to grow xeriphytic species of plants (drought tolerant) in your garden. The following are a few plants which are known to be drought tolerant and have adapted to dry conditions naturally:

Yucca gloriosa

Lavendar

Thyme

Crocus

Evening Primrose

Juniper

You can also introduce sheltering in the form of garden walls which helps reduce the amount of water lost through evapotranspiration.

The choice of paving itself is also an important consideration. Acheson & Glover provide a permeable block paver specific for this use, but have devised an innovative approach to laying all our paving products, using spacers, to allow flexibility of design. Contact us at one of our Brick and Paving Centres for further information on this service.

When requested, our landscape designers will design paved surfaces which are drained in such a way to encourage rainwater to soak away naturally into the ground, therefore helping with groundwater recharge.

Overall by introducing hard landscaping materials such as paving into your home design you can maximise your leisure time, space and enjoy your home guilt free in the knowledge that you are doing you are helping the environment at the same time.
