How to build Garden Walls
The following project uses our unique dry build garden retaining wall products Anchor Windsor or Anchor Bayfield. These products are gravity garden walls up to a maximum height of 900mm. For larger projects you can contact us for free with your specific requirements and we will get back to you.
Ground Preparation
Stake out the line of wall.
Dig foundation trench 600mm wide x 300mm deep (Anchor Bayfield block) or 600mm wide x 200mm deep (Anchor Windsor block), to the line of the wall.
Compaction
Firmly compact 150mm of compactable gravel in foundation trench to form levelling pad.Always start wall at lowest elevation.
First Course
Position wall units side-by-side on levelling pad. Make sure units are level side-to-side and front to back. Use string line to align the back edges of the first course units. Continue assembling additional courses in a staggered relationship to the course beneath (running bond). Pulling each unit forward until each lip is in contact with the unit below.
Backfill
Backfill each course and the cores with clean stone for drainage. Drain column should extend 300mm behind the wall. Compactable material may be used to fill the remainder of the cut, compact this section. Do not compact drainage material. Organic soil on clay is not recommended for backfill material.
It would be recommended that a landscape fabric be placed between the back of the wall and the drainage column, to stop fines washing out to the face of the wall.
Finishing Caps
Caps have a stone cut face, front and back to give a finished look, from both directions. Always start capping at lowest elevation. Lay caps alternatively short and long to achieve a straight line. Use recommended adhesive to firm cap to the wall. Ask our sales team for advice.
