Heywood Memorial Garden, Rochdale
Acheson & Glover have played a significant role in the recent £450,000 regeneration of Heywood’s listed war memorial and gardens. The scheme has been funded by Heywood’s New Deal for Communities, as part of the wider Heywood Town Centre Project being managed and delivered by Rochdale Development Agency.
Every design feature within the garden has been carefully considered resulting in a more attractive and appropriate setting for the listed war memorial. Primrose yellow and red roses, the colour of the local regiment – the Lancashire Fusiliers, have been picked for the display, which along with the complementary hard landscaping provides a visual stunning centrepiece to the scheme.
Designed by landscape Architects from Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council, the project has been sensitively developed in discussion with a representative from the local branch of the British Legion to ensure the design reflects the wishes of Heywood’s ex service men and woman.
In keeping with this vision the chosen paving surface from Acheson & Glover’s TerraPave Natural Aggregate Flags in Florento Ground colour which have been complemented with Rimini Ground 400x400mm banding. The result is a paved surface which not only complements the colours of the soft-landscaping and flowers in the centre of the garden but provides a surfacing which is extremely hard wearing for the numerous visitors expected to the garden. In addition the architecture inherent in the listed Cenotaph itself has been complemented with the provision of natural landscaping materials.
As the focus for future Remembrance Day services in the town the scheme now suitably honours Heywood’s war heroes, and provides a much improved environment for visitors.
