Isaac Agnew Garage, Portadown

Located on the Carn Court Road, Portadown the newly designed Audi and Mercedes Garage for Isaac Agnews is a superb example of sustainable paving design.

With the forecourt being a contributing factor to additional sales in the garage, paving blocks were the obvious choice for the surfacing of the area for their superior aesthetics, however with typical Irish weather conditions the flat surfaces of the forecourt were susceptible to surface ponding. In addition the fact that numerous vehicles would be used on the surface meant that there would be increased pollution being fed into the sewerage system if traditional drainage had been used.

Permeable paving allows surface water to be controlled at source, draining directly into the sub base. With the provision of permeable paving the requirement for additional drainage was reduced. At the same time this helped to recharge the natural groundwater, creating a cost effective and environmentally friendly solution to the management of surface water run off.

Acheson & Glover supplied a range of paving products on the site including 200x100x80mm permeable pavers in Creagh Peat Brindle colour within the two used car display areas. Over 2,600m2 of paving was used alone on these areas. The paving pattern used was a traditional 90 degree herringbone pattern, which ties perfectly in design with the paving used on the side roadways and paths. At the pedestrian walkway areas TerraPave Boulevard in Silver colour provides a smooth walkway entrance to the garage for customers. Tactile paving flags in sandstone were used to mark the end of these areas for the blind and partially sighted. Overall Acheson & Glover have provided the knowledge required to successfully complete the overall design of the permeable area and the provision of a range of suitable paving materials for the scheme.
