The Linen Green

The factory produced some of the finest linens in the world until the early 1990s when production was moved to a purpose-built plant close by. Under the supervision of a local community development association, it was subsequently renovated and restored to provide retail, office and warehousing units. Now a tourist attraction, its heritage lives on thanks to a linen museum and retail units operated by internationally renowned Irish Linen designers including Paul Costelloe and Helen McAlinden. Other speciality outlets include Storey womens-wear and Foxford Giftware.

For the pedestrian areas, Acheson and Glover developed a new product to help Park Hood’s vision become a reality. Making use of its own in-house resources, the company created TerraPave® Strada - a narrow pavior measuring 200x60x60mm in two colour blends with a rumbled finish to give a rustic aged appearance. It reflects the colours of the traditional Belfast red brick seen throughout the site in the mill chimney tower, the former weaving sheds and the mill race. At the same time, Strada was designed with contemporary proportions, making it ideal for marking out the primary route to the new shopping areas.

Acheson & Glover’s TerraPave® Country Cobble also features extensively throughout the scheme. Widely used throughout Ireland, the product successfully captures the aged appearance of traditional natural stone setts associated with traditional construction while at the same time offering the versatility of a modern paving solution.
