Navan Credit Union
Located in Kennedy Road, Navan, Co. Meath. St. Mary’s Credit Union has gained notoriety as potentially the most sustainable building in Ireland. Such is the attention to detail inherent in both the structure itself (Ireland’s first five storey timber frame building) and the methods used in keeping in line with sustainability best practises that it has recently been selected for showcasing at the World Sustainable Building Conference in Tokyo. The project has also been shortlisted as a finalist in the Sustainable Energy Awards rewarding excellence in energy management and sustainability in the industrial, commercial and public sector. Designed by Gaia Ecotecture Architects in Dublin - a practice world renowned for its commitments to environmentally-conscious design in the UK and Ireland. Navan Credit Union provides a perfect example of how great urban architecture doesn’t have to be compromised through using sustainable methods.
Acheson & Glover’s innovative TerraPave Permeable Paving system, provided the source control system to deal effectively with all storm water on site, thus fitting perfectly in harmony with the overall ethos of sustainability on this site. The TerraPave Permeable Paving system was used for all paved areas on site both roads and pathways and whilst providing the functional storm water control, also provides a very pleasing aesthetic finish.
On this project site conditions allowed all surface water to simply infiltrate through the paving joints, through the sub-base below directly into the ground beneath, therefore helping with groundwater recharge. It is well realized today, that as the water passes through the stone below the paving, improvement of the water is realized due to the natural processes of filtration, sedimentation and the natural action of microbes.
With more and more emphasis on providing sustainability within commercial building schemes in Ireland, TerraPave Permeable Paving will continue to offer the ideal solution to storm water source control to both Architects and Engineers.
