Northern Ireland’s Roads Service is approving a growing number of roadside
projects incorporating Anchor retaining wall products manufactured by County
Tyrone-based Acheson & Glover.
Roads Service regulations require that all proposed retaining walls within six
metres of a road boundary - or which support a public road - are subject to
technical approval for highway structures (TAS).
Anchor Landmark is one of two Acheson & Glover products now being used
successfully in TAS approved projects. Designed for high performance under
extreme loading conditions, Landmark holds BBA Roads & Bridges accreditation.
Currently, one of the most high profile projects to feature the product is the
Westlink/M1 upgrade where a number of Anchor Landmark walls are being built to
support widened and heightened slip road embankments. Each wall is approximately
150 metres in length and up to four metres tall.
Another BBA-approved Acheson & Glover product - Anchor Vertica - has been used
to build a wall along an arterial route through one of the biggest new public
housing developments in Northern Ireland. The three-metre high wall in the
Lagmore scheme in West Belfast have been built by McAleer and Rushe for the
Northern Ireland Housing Executive and the BIH Housing Association.
According to Acheson & Glover’s retaining wall sales manager, Paddy Devlin,
developers and contractors involved in such projects need to make themselves
aware of the relevant technical requirements especially if they want roads
within new developments to be adopted by Roads Service.

“Failing to do this can create serious problems when it comes to finalising
contractual arrangements for selling houses or retrieving road bonds,” says
Paddy. “We aim to help avoid such problems by offering strong technical support
and advice in association with our partners. These include Anchor Wall Systems,
the US developer of the world’s most popular retaining wall system and
Maccaferri, the internationally recognised retaining wall specialist who provide
engineering support and distribute the system exclusively throughout the UK and
Ireland,” adds Paddy.
