County Tyrone-based Acheson & Glover has won a top honour in the annual Sustainable Ireland Energy, Environmental & Waste Management 2007 awards.

The company picked up the Biodiversity Project of the Year for its work with the Ballinderry River Enhancement Association to safeguard the future of white-clawed crayfish in the Ballinderry River and Lough Neagh Wetlands.

The project is the only one of its type in the UK and Ireland and forms part of a wider European initiative to protect the globally threatened species. Acheson & Glover used its technical expertise to construct an experimental habitat complex in one of its working sandpits near Pomeroy as part of a joint bid to stop the crayfish disappearing from the area. The judges described the winning entry as ‘an excellent demonstration of partnership in action, with a local business joining forces with a local rivers conservation group.

The awards are supported by the Environment & Heritage Service and other leading players within industry and government. Held annually, they are designed to recognise the immense efforts being made by organisations and companies from all of the various and diverse sectors involved. They are organised by 4square media, the Hillsborough headquartered publishers of ‘Sustainable Ireland,’ the magazine for the waste, recycling, environmental and energy sectors.
