Spring may have arrived but Acheson & Glover’s Evishanoran
sand quarry near Pomeroy, County Tyrone, is covered by a glacier. A glacier of the
computer-generated variety, that is, which features in the second part of BBC Northern Ireland’s Blueprint natural history series, next Monday
(April 7).
The programme on the Ice Age in Ireland examines the effects of melting glaciers
on the landscape surrounding the quarry – seen here during filming - thousands
of years ago. The debris left behind by the retreating ice is now an important source
of sand used in the production of Acheson & Glover’s range of construction
products.

The sand pit is also home to a ‘habitat bay’ specially created by the
company for the Ballinderry River Enhancement Association (BREA) as part of an award-winning
scheme to help conserve the endangered white-clawed crayfish.
