County Tyrone-based Acheson & Glover has won two top trophies in a leading international environmental award scheme. The honours - a gold award and a Green Champion of Ireland trophy - were presented at the National Green Apple Environmental Awards ceremony hosted recently in the Houses of Parliament, London by Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt.
The construction materials manufacturer picked up the gold award for its work in developing an innovative Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) at its Dungannon plant. The system provides a low-technology method for managing rainfall by replicating natural drainage to prevent pollution, control flooding, recharge groundwater and enhance the environment.
The company won the Green Champion of Ireland trophy for contributing a paper describing a novel recycling project at its sand production facility in Belcoo, County Fermanagh. The project involved the construction of a state-of-the-art recycling plant to convert 40,000 tonnes of lime slurry per year into granulated lime - a commodity much in demand by farmers throughout Europe.

Commenting on Acheson & Glover's success, the Green Organisation's National Organiser, Roger Wolens said: "Our objective is not only to recognise and publicise various environmental endeavours, but also to help others follow those examples. "This winning paper will now be published with a selection of others in Green Heroes, the international work of reference on environmental best practice that enables many thousands around the world to learn and benefit from the achievements of our winners," he said. According to Aaron Currie, Acheson & Glover's health and safety manager, the double success underlines the strength of the company's commitment to managing the impact of its business on the environment.
"Having won a number of local awards over the past couple of years, we're delighted that our dedication to maintaining the highest environmental standards is now being recognised at a national and international level. "We are particularly pleased that our success will be highlighted in the Green Heroes International Work of Reference which is to be distributed to companies, environment professionals and media around the globe," adds Aaron.
