Acheson & Glover has launched a new retaining wall system designed to enable walls to be built faster and taller without the need for reinforcement.

The high performance ReCon system has the look, scale and durability of large boulder-sized stones. It was originally developed by ReCon Retaining Wall Systems Inc of Minneapolis. The system is now being manufactured at Acheson & Glover’s plant in Carryduff, Co Down, to complement its existing Anchor product range.

Acheson & Glover Business Development Manager, Paddy Devlin, believes the new product will find a ready market in Ireland.

“ReCon is a unique and very attractive system that provides a real alternative to shuttered walls. It is very fast to put up - one block gives you almost half a metre of retaining wall – and significantly less manual labour is required to install it than other products currently on the market. “In addition, because it can be built higher than other systems without having to use geo-grid, it is particularly suited for use in situations where space is at an absolute premium and there is no room for traditional tail reinforcement,” adds Paddy.

ReCon blocks come in a choice of depths and a standard face size of 122 cms x 41 cms, giving each a total face area of almost half a square metre. The dry build system incorporates an innovative tongue and groove locking mechanism which automatically gives a batter of 3.58 degrees and does away with the need for mortar and placement pins. The blocks come in an attractive textured finish.

Because of their size and weight, they can be built to a height of around 3.5m before reinforcing geo-grid is required. Coupled with the fact the blocks are installed mechanically, this makes them very fast to erect and eliminates the need for – and cost associated with - excavation and soil replacement required for geo-grid reinforcement. Significantly higher ReCon walls can also be built using standard reinforcement techniques.
