Hard landscape and construction products specialists, Acheson & Glover Group has supplied their top of the range TerraPave® Natural Aggregate Flags to one of the UK’s most prestigious retail developments.
The Holywood Exchange retail Park at Tillysburn, Belfast, designed by Hobart and Heron Architects is a 150,000 sq ft scheme that forms part of the Belfast Harbour redevelopment. Built for Aquis Estates and Anglia & General Developments Ltd at a cost of £11million, its modern, understated looks and beautifully detailed landscaping perfectly complement its setting at the foot of the Holywood Hills.
A&G’s TerraPave® Natural Aggregate Flags, in Florento and Rimini, smooth-ground finish, form pedestrian walkways around the building exterior. Over 8000 sq metres were used and this combination of silver grey and charcoal colours works beautifully with the building. The modern hi-tech look is further enhanced by the incorporation of clinical, stainless steel bollards and seating.

Co-ordinating, natural aggregate concrete kerbs were also supplied to add definition and create clear demarcation between pedestrian and vehicular pavements. The designers also specified 5000sqm of TerraPave rectangular block paving for car parking bays, which meant that Acheson & Glover acted as a one stop hard landscape shop for contractor McLaughlin & Harvey.
Acheson & Glover also provided the matching natural granite plinths that support the structural columns which are a strong visual element in the striking steel and glass façade. The use of steel trusses – seen in many old buildings in Belfast – is a particularly notable feature and provides a clear link between the old and new.
Out of town retail parks are not usually noted for their design excellence but the developer’s demanding quality requirements for Holywood Exchange are clearly illustrated in the use of only the best materials and finishes, both inside and out.
