Belfast's regeneration is providing inspiration for one of the largest landscape and urban design practices in North-West England. A group of senior partners from Warrington based TEP recently visited Northern Ireland as part of an ongoing CPD programme to learn about how hard landscaping products have contributed to urban renewal.
In addition to visiting landmark projects such as the Waterfront Hall and Holywood exchange, the team also visited landscape products manufacturer, Acheson & Glover, to find out about the latest production methods.
"The Belfast trip really helped the team," explains Emily Rees, a senior landscape architect with TEP. "Hard landscaping is a TEP speciality, so it was useful for us to see how the choice of surfacing materials had contributed to the improvements in Belfast."
The visit to Acheson & Glover's high technology paving plant in Toome was also a great success, she says."We wanted to look at the plant and get a feel for the product quality. Long-term durability and good colour retention are very important to us when we choose paving and what we saw was very impressive."
The trip was part of TEP's Flare Day programme which is open to all staff after they have completed one full year with the practice. Graeme Atherton, senior landscape architect with TEP explains that the programme is designed to make self-improvement enjoyable as well as educational.
"Flare Days are popular with our staff so they are good for our business. We all learn a great deal seeing the manufacture of materials and creative landscape solutions in different regions.
"Our latest Flare Day to Belfast was a real success. Everyone has come back full of enthusiasm for what they have seen," says Mr Atherton.
