Acheson & Glover has completed a major contract for prestressed hollowcore flooring and precast stairs and landings for a new state of the art life sciences research facility at Swansea University in Wales. Funded by the university, IBM and the Welsh Assembly, the £50 million Institute of Life Sciences building houses the largest computer in Europe as well as the largest ground source heat pump in Wales.

The recently opened six-storey facility is expected to become a major international centre for research into a range of mainstream diseases such as diabetes, cancer and cardiac ailments. During its construction, Acheson & Glover supplied a total of 5,000m2 of flooring and 24 stair and landing units which the company also helped to design and install. According to Acheson & Glover commercial manager, Brian Mulgrew, precast offered a number of important cost and quality benefits.

“For a growing number of projects, such as this, the initial cost of precast can be very attractive. In addition, because precast is installed on site there is a minimal requirement for wet trades. The speed of installation can also bring a major bonus. “A growing number of contractors now appreciate that there are also clear quality benefits in using precast. While the quality of concrete cast in situ can vary from day to day due to on site temperature variations and other factors, our precast is manufactured using the most stringent of processes in a highly controlled environment,” adds Brian.
