Brownfield site design
permeable paving
SuDS and brownfield sites
A common misconception is that SUDS cannot be used on contaminated sites. In fact, appropriately designed permeable paving can be successfully incorporated into any brownfield development and offers advantages over conventional drainage solutions. Using permeable paving, there is no requirement to excavate deep drainage trenches and the overall depth of excavation is also minimised. This means that the quantity of contaminated material which will incur specialist tipping costs will be kept to a minimum. The depth of excavation can be further reduced by using special high strength geocellular boxes as a sub-base replacement technique. The high void ratio of these boxes enables the overall pavement depth to be dramatically reduced.

SuDS retro fit
SUDS can also be used very effectively to overcome drainage problems on existing development and the use of permeable paving can provide a cost effective solution without increasing land-take.
